Always remove the plastic wrapping from the garments you receive from your cleaner. It’s best to leave clothes in the open air, because when they’re left in plastic, impurities in the air can settle on the fabric and cause it to turn yellow.

To preserve a white garment, wrap it in a brown or blue paper bag. The paper will let the air circulate while blocking out impurities.

CLEANING YOUR CLOTHES AND FABRICS

Never soak a garment for more than 10 minutes in a bleach-based solution. After a long soak, the bleach no longer attacks the stains, but the fabric itself. It’s best to increase the temperature of the soaking water, bearing in mind that the strength of bleach doubles for every 10 degrees Celsius rise in temperature.

To save on hot water, most brands of soap are equally effective in cold water.

A good way to save on laundry soap is to lift the washer lid during the cycle and check the suds level. On subsequent loads, reduce the amount of soap until the foam doesn’t cover the entire surface of the water, bearing in mind that it’s not the foam that acts on the stains, but the water that has become alkaline.

Do not dry a comforter in the dryer, as its bulk prevents the article from moving properly, and the heating element may burn the fabric if it remains in the same position for too long.

Never attempt to remove a stain from a leather or suede garment. Whatever the nature of the stain, any attempt to remove it will only increase the problem.

Never allow a stain on clothing to age: the oxygen in the air will oxidize it. After a while, it will become almost indelible.
